AMSA – Australia Qualified Chefs update for Ships Cook Certificate

I spoke with AMSA this morning to find out how Australian qualified chefs can apply to AMSA for their ships cook certificate.

As far as I could understand from my chat if a chef has the commercial cookery iii chef qualification from Australia and has done their STCW and ENG1 in Australia they can apply to AMSA for the SCC.

I was told a chef needs to complete form 419 which is a lengthy online form so I would advise chefs to read the notes and contact AMSA directly using the information on page at https://www.amsa.gov.au/forms-and-publications/international/forms/Seafarers/AMSA419.asp

The page has the links and contacts to enable chefs to apply.

The notes form can be found at https://www.amsa.gov.au/forms-and-publications/AMSA419a.pdf for Australian based chefs and at https://www.amsa.gov.au/forms-and-publications/AMSA419o.pdf for overseas chefs.

I WOULD RECOMMEND CHEFS CONTACT AMSA BY TELEPHONE TO VERIFY THEY HAVE THE RIGHT QUALS AND FIND OUT THE COST FIRST BEFORE COMPLETING THE FORM. THE TELEPHONE NUMBER IS ON THE PAGE AT https://www.amsa.gov.au/forms-and-publications/international/forms/Seafarers/AMSA419.asp

I applied for the AMSA Ships Cook Certificate in august of this year and it is very straight forward and easy. Just have all paperwork in order and make sure you have a AMSA approved medical cert (as a eng1 is not accepted). If everything is in order couldn’t be easier. I had my physical cert 2 weeks from application.
