Assessment in Marine Cookery and Ship’s Cook Certificate? not the same thing folks!

Efrem here from YachtChefs.com in Antibes… I get enquiries every week about the Ship’s Cook Certificate from chefs around the world.

I hope to soon have a current list of official MCA approved centres who are allowed to offer the Assessment in Marine Cookery for chefs in the yachting industry. I will post that here as soon as I get it back as there are new changes to include.

One thing that is always confusing chefs is that chefs are sometimes not aware that passing the Assessment in Marine Cookery is not the same as having the MCA Ship’s Cook Certificate.

So am posting this to explain this a bit more..

Any chef who sits and passes the Assessment in Marine Cookery at any of the MCA Approved centres should then collect together all their documents as required by the MCA and then send them to the MCA to be reviewed and then they will receive back the actual Ship’s Cook Certificate which looks like a passport or a Seaman’s Book.

NOTE: CHEFS NEED TO APPLY TO THE MCA WITH ALL THE DOCS AND FORM SIGNED IN ORDER TO RECEIVE AN ACTUAL SHIP’S COOK CERTIFICATE FROM THE MCA.

THE COMPLETION OF THE ASSESSMENT IN MARINE COOKERY IS NOT THE SAME AS BEING ISSUED THE SHIP’S COOK CERTIFICATE BY THE MCA!

The assessment in marine cookery is the ‘assessment’ of the chef and you have to then send this certificate off when you get it to the MCA along with all the other docs listed on the MCA site at https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/ships-cook-certificate-of-competency

eg you must print and complete the MCA form MSF 4395 REV 05/18 and send this off to get the actual MCA Ship’s Cook Certificate.

Here BELOW is an example of the MCA Ship’s Cook Certificate. This is what your yacht will need as proof you have it.. Not the certificate for the Assessment in Marine Cookery as they are not the same thing..

Hope this helps clear things a bit more..

Good Luck!

  • It takes some time for the CoC to come back but if you just keep a copy of you pass certificate and application it should suffice as long as the application has been made with the MCA.
